Heads or Tails #71 - Watch

Three quick stories.

1. I know that Angels watch over me and help guide me by telling me things or showing signs. I am very in tune to this.
2. I once bought a cheesy gold watch with tiny faux diamonds and sapphires around the face.
I wore it to school and the first and second graders were very impressed by its dazzling gems.
A few told me that they thought I was a rich lady. That was so funny especially when the watch turned my wrist green, remember, it was a cheesy watch used for playground duty.
3. I enjoy watching my children grow but oh they grow so fast!

CrackerJack Surprise

"Candy coated popcorn, peanuts and a surprise!
That's what you get in CrackerJacks."
However, a woman bought a box of crackers only to find 10 crisp $100 bills in an envelope inside the box.
She turned it into the police who thought it might be drug money dropped off. The police learned from the store manager that an elderly lady came in all upset because she returned a box of crackers that had her life savings in it for she no longer trusted the banks. Good thing she got it back.
Here is the story and there is a poll to take.
Now here is my story of found money.
It was extremely windy out and the leaves were swirling wildly about in the air and dancing in the street.
I had the dogs outside and it was so windy, their ears were pinned back from the force of the wind.
As I stand in the driveway, I see some odd shaped item tumble and flip flop towards me from the street and lands at my feet.
It is a $20. bill, out of thin air.
We live in the sticks so hard to tell exactly where it came from for any return.
I tell this story to my family and they can't believe it.
We decide to donate it to a good cause since it was not mine to begin with and it could help other people in less fortunate situations.
The End
Merry Christmas!

I also think that the book they mention The Complete Idiot's Guide to Personal Finance in Your 20's and 30's by Sarah Young Fisher sounds like a great book to give a college graduate or someone in that age group (like a niece of nephew, maybe even a family freeloader/co-dependent) just starting out.

Well, here are some more pictures.
Right now we are having another storm, a snow storm that will leave us with 8-12 inches more on top of the 6 inches we got on Wednesday.
Then to top it off, more snow on Sunday.
There are still many people without power!

When I first heard the song I thought it was crazy, then I saw the video and laughed my head off.
"You spin me right round baby right round like a record right round round baby . . ."
My goodness, look at the hair, the costumes, the surrender flags, the disco ball (guess for a dance tune) and that little toss of confetti. Oh and the eye patch and eye makeup. And at the end, he seems tied up with his scarf. Guess it is glam punk rock look with a disco sound.
I am going to have my Dr. Phil analyze this.
On the other hand, Oreo's have three round components -- two round cookies and the round filling. I like Double Stuff or the chocolate fillings the best. Ring Dings (or Ding Dongs) are round too. Just a couple of sweet thoughts.
Meanwhile, enjoy this crazy song.

Yes, ruined my computer/blogging time -- lost power on Thursday and got it back on Sunday. No heat, frig, hot water or lights. Below freezing temps.
No phones (cell phones down also) and only one radio station available and that had 45 minutes of non-stop music (hard rock) which made getting info nearly impossible.
Thursday night you could hear snap, crackle, pops (branches falling) and booms (trees crashing to the earth) all through the night. I put the dogs out and saw a few trees fall at about 11 pm. It just sounded like we were living on a shooting range.
Friday morning everything covered in a thick coat of ice as pictured above. Trees bent to the ground from the weight. We were in our driveway just listening to all the noise it made as if fell from the treetops to the ground. Like those old glass wind chimes. What fell, looked like chards of glass from broken bottles. You could not stand near the trees because you could really get hurt not knowing the size of ice that would fall down. The road was covered with the broken ice crystals.
I had to go stay at my brother's house an hour away with the children and the dogs. Both dogs were freaking out over the change.
We don't have a wood stove or fireplace (silly builder, what was he thinking?)
At least the car was warm and I was able to listen to the radio (other stations).
My husband went to his Mom's house because he had to work the weekend.
We went to the store (running on generators) for a few supplies and they were not selling any diary, meats, frozen food.
All the water was sold out.
As we drove, at times, one side of the road with trees was all ice ladened while the other side was just normal. What a contrast.
At my brother's house, it was if nothing had happened!
Anyways, the minute I heard our power was back on, we travelled home.
On the way back, still many traffic lights out and we went through towns still with no power period.
We come back into our neighborhood and we see that the neighbors have put up their Christmas lights to celebrate, I guess, or it was just something to do.
Tonight there are still some people without power and it is cold and windy.
Some they say may not get power back till after Christmas, mostly because of downed trees.
The electric company says they are going to have to redo their grid system now since this is the worst storm in their history of operation.
So now I am catching up, but really do you ever catch up?
On the Christmas list this year (just added): a generator, although sold out everywhere, and many have been reported stolen from some area homes.
I also need to go get some more small bottles of water for the next outage.
Hopefully, only till the beginning of March and then better weather but sometimes, winter does extend it's stay for another month or so. I hope not next year! I don't thing the electric company wants to be out in this type of weather working althought they did a super fantastic job under the circumstances.

Well, evidently, I have Dr. Phil all to myself.
I found him at Good Will on the floor under a display. His feet were hanging out like the Wicked Witch of the East's feet after the Dorothy's house land on her. I got him for a quarter and bought him because I thought it was such a funny find and a cheap thrill less than a javajolt re-fill. He is 4 1/2 inches tall and portable. I laugh at him, only because he is so "cute and posable". I never knew he was so "plastic". I wanted to put him in my blog and this was the perfect opportunity to do it with the HoT theme "fill or Phil", otherwise, I have no idea what I would have done - LOL. Notice that he is "center blog" like "center stage". And I had the privilege to give him a quick hot shower in the kitchen sink, and a pat dry before he got "scanned". He had to get scanned twice, the first time, he was too large so I had to reduce him in size. I really don't know if this is a figurine of Dr. Phil or from some space sci-fi play set.
Maybe this is Evil Dr. Phil or type, notice how Goth he is, well ok, he is wearing a white shirt and tie like he is going out to dinner. Maybe I should do some crazy bloggy things with him from time to time for a laugh but mostly to entertain myself and create a "fantasy world".
I think he ought to go counsel the
But wait, Barbie is confused as to what career she wants, what outfit to wear or accessory to sport, where she wants to go, what car to drive to get her there, what house to live in, her hair style, and she is 50 now and has had lots of plastic surgery (in the doll world sense). I hear Dr. Phil ask, "How's that working for ya? Get a life." but these words would only confuse Barbie more. Or maybe she is "forgetful and confused" because she is menopausal?
I always had the suspicion that she was really her little sister's Kelly's mom (Ken the dad? or GI Joe?), but we did not know it. We have never seen Barbie's parents (Tammy had a whole family). Kelly came out of nowhere, just like her little brother Tommy. Oh, am I starting internet rumors here? Has anyone else questioned that?
Yes, I guess I have had my fill of hot air for this post.
I am going to go listen to Christmas tunes by the Phil-harmonic Orchestra.
Maybe my Dr. Phil would like to tune in too.

I've come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It's my personal approach that creates the climate. It's my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a student's life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all my
situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a student humanized or de-humanized.

THE TEACHER
The teacher looked ahead with misgivings, but with hope.
Would the way be smooth or rough?
Would it end in success or failure?
And she stood and looked and wondered.
And a voice said, answering: "There will be no end."
And the teacher smiled and said:
"I know it will end. I may teach one year, two years,
Or possibly many years,
But this I know: Someday it will end."
And the teacher went forward to teach.
And many gathered around her,
And they all had need to learn.
And the teacher looked into their eyes and desired to fill their needs
And she taught them with mind and heart and voice —
A mind filled with knowledge,
A voice speaking wisdom,
And a heart overflowing with love.
Then life changed, and the teacher taught no more.
No more did eager students gather around her.
"It has ended," said the teacher, continuing on the road of
life. "This is the end of my teaching."
And she believed this until...
A doctor stood and said: "I am here because this teacher taught me."
A lawyer stood and said: "I am here because this teacher taught me."
An astronaut stood and said, ”I am here because this teacher taught me."
An engineer stood and said, “I am here because this teacher taught me."
A teacher stood and said, "I am here because this teacher taught me."
And many in good positions stood and said, “ I am here because this teacher taught me."
And the teacher looked ahead of those who had been taught
and saw the continued steps of progress, work, and success before each one.
And joy filled the teacher's heart, and she said,
”This is not the end. There is no end to my teachings.”

TEACHING
Let me see if I've got this right. You want me to go into that room with all those kids, and fill their every waking moment with a love for learning. Not only that, I'm to install a sense of pride in their ethnicity, behaviorally modify disruptive behavior, and observe them for signs of abuse.
*** I am to fight the war on drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, check their backpacks for guns and raise their self-esteem. I'm to teach them patriotism, good citizenship, sportsmanship and fair play, how and where to register to vote, how to balance a checkbook and how to apply for a job, but I am never to ask if they are in this country illegally.
***I am to check their heads occasionally for lice, maintain a safe environment, recognize signs of potential antisocial behavior, offer advice, write letters of recommendation for student employment and scholarships, encourage a respect for the cultural diversity of others, and, oh yeah, teach, always making sure that I give the girls in my class fifty percent of my attention.
***I'm required by my contract to be working on my own time (summers and evenings) and at my own expense towards additional certification, advanced certification and a master's degree, to sponsor the cheerleaders or the sophomore class (my choice) and after school I am to attend committee and faculty meetings and participate in staff development training to maintain my current certification and employment status.
***I am to be a paragon of virtue larger than life, such that my very presence will awe my students into being obedient and respectful of authority.
***I'm to do all of this with just a piece of chalk, a few books, and a bulletin board, and on a starting salary that qualifies my family for food stamps in many states.
***Is that all?
