Here is the basic 101 of Hot Blog criteria --

1. How often you post to your blog.
2. Comments you make in other blogs as well as responses to comments in your own blog.
3. Hits you get within tBlog.
4. Hits you get from searches or your blog's URL links (like in a signature on a message board).
5. Number of visits you have overall.

If I fall off the list and don't post for a while, when I come back, my blog will go back to the number area (if I were #5, it might now be 8,9,10) it sat before I left just based on the previous visits and activities.

The more visits you get from searches is a big factor in placement.  So maybe you don't post often but if you get lots of visitors from searches or links on other sites, that will keep you on the list for a while.
